Secret Spots We Love in Trinidad

Hidden beaches, forest fringes, and mist-flecked cliffs make Trinidad, California a coastal gem unlike any other. This small seaside town is packed with charm, history, and natural wonders. Here are some of our favorite secret spots—quiet escapes and wild adventures waiting to be discovered.

Stagecoach Drive’s Secret Beach

Tucked away at the end of Stagecoach Drive lies a secluded beach beloved for its charm and hidden beauty. Wander down to the shoreline and comb for agates, or catch the rare sight of abalone clinging to the rocks at low tide. With hardly a soul in sight, this cove offers pure, serene solitude surrounded by nature’s quiet magic.

College Cove & Elk Head Trail

College Cove is a tucked-away crescent of sand that makes the perfect sunny-day escape. Protected from the wind, it’s ideal for lounging, exploring tidepools, or just soaking up the coastal beauty.

Follow the Elk Head Trail above the cove for sweeping views of the Pacific and a chance to witness the dramatic blowhole. When the swell is right, the ocean surges send fine sea mist shooting high into the air—a natural spectacle that feels alive with energy.

Old Home Beach

Just behind Murphy’s Market in Trinidad lies Old Home Beach. This sandy stretch is framed with piles of driftwood, sometimes sculpted by the currents into natural works of art.

Historically, the Tsurai villagers called this beach “Old Home,” as their village once stood above its cliffs. Today, it’s a place where history and nature meet—perfect for a peaceful walk or a moment of reflection.

Redwood & Ocean Adventures

Beyond the beaches, Trinidad opens the door to some of the most breathtaking adventures on California’s Redwood Coast.

Redwood National Park & Prairie Creek State Park: Wander ancient groves where towering trees, some centuries old, stand like natural cathedrals. Trails such as Fern Canyon immerse you in lush greenery and waterfall-fed ferns.

Sue-meg State Park: Formerly Patrick’s Point, this park features towering cliffs, lush forests, accessible beaches, and even a recreated Yurok Village.

Seawood Cape Preserve: A rugged preserve with forested canyons and coastal bluffs, where harbor seals and sea lions often rest along the shoreline.

Humboldt Lagoons State Park: Paddle or kayak through tranquil lagoons like Big Lagoon, a peaceful haven for birdwatching, photography, and quiet exploration.

Trinidad invites discovery at every turn. From hidden coves and driftwood-strewn beaches to towering redwoods and wild ocean adventures, each spot tells its own story. Come explore these secrets, and you’ll soon see why Trinidad is one of the North Coast’s most magical destinations.
