Humboldt’s Most Lovable Festivals

Humboldt has so much to offer when it comes to festivals.  From local food and music to arts, culture, and family activities, these are some of the festivals we look forward to every year. They’re fun, welcoming, and a great way to spend time together with family, friends, and neighbors.

arcata ca

Pastels on the Plaza

Where: Arcata Plaza
When: First Saturday of October

This one happens 20 minutes south in Arcata, but we claim it as ours, too. Dozens of artists hit the pavement with soft pastels and big dreams, transforming the town square into a rainbow walkway of murals.

Each square is sponsored by a local business or nonprofit, and the whole thing is a fundraiser for Northcoast Children’s Services. It starts early, and by mid-afternoon, the entire plaza is bursting with art and color.

The Arcata Bay Oyster Festival

Where: Arcata Plaza
When: June (check dates; it moves slightly each year)

Oysters aren’t just food here—they’re an identity. This festival features every kind of oyster you can imagine: raw, grilled, fried, baked with cheese and jalapeño, or doused in garlic butter. There’s also live music on multiple stages, beer gardens with local brews, and a wild oyster-calling contest that you just have to hear to believe.

Come early, wear layers, and maybe don’t plan to drive right after. You’ll want to linger.

Trinidad Fish Festival (aka Fisherman’s Feast)

Where: Trinidad Town Center
When: Traditionally Father’s Day weekend; sometimes held in fall now

This is the event people get nostalgic about. It used to be called the Fish Fest, a classic summer staple with BBQ salmon, chowder booths, live music, and lighthouse tours. These days, it sometimes appears in a new fall version—but the spirit remains.

We go for the fish dinners, stay for the community hugs, and always check the art booths before we leave.

Forest Moon Festival

Where: All over Humboldt County (including Trinidad!)
When: Late May

Yes, the redwoods were Endor in Return of the Jedi. And yes, we throw a party about it. The Forest Moon Festival is a newer tradition, but it’s quickly become a local favorite. There are trivia nights, scavenger hunts, cosplay hikes, and themed markets.

Some years you’ll even see Ewoks on Trinidad Head (no promises). It’s a fun, family-friendly weekend that brings a little galaxy far, far away into our foggy redwood world.

Bonus: North Country Fair

Where: Arcata Plaza
When: Mid-September

Think of this one as our love letter to peace, dance, and handmade everything. It’s been going for 50 years and includes a Samba parade, an All Species Parade (yes, costumes encouraged), craft booths, global music, and some of the most joyful dance performances you’ll ever see.

It’s a great time to pick up handmade jewelry, herbal balms, and local tie-dye. Bring cash, a tote bag, and an open mind.

Hope to see you there,
