This annual “fun run” crosses creeks, trails, and even a river mouth. Part community challenge, part costume party, and part muddy rite of passage—it’s the only race where crossing waist-deep water is just part of the charm. Shuttle service and clam chowder await at the finish line.

Where: Arcata Marsh and Humboldt Bay

One of the most anticipated spring events on the North Coast, this four-day birding bonanza celebrates the annual spring migration with expert-led field trips, fascinating lectures, and hands-on workshops. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just curious, this all-ages festival is packed with opportunities to spot Tufted Puffins, California Condors, Marbled Murrelets, and more. Highlights include a festive banquet, silent auction, and guided walks through some of the best wetlands and coastal habitats in the region.

Where: Launch from Humboldt Bay, offshore to Eel River Canyon

Serious birders and ocean lovers, this one’s for you. This deep-sea expedition heads 15–20 miles offshore to the pelagic zone where you’ll search for albatross, shearwaters, auklets, and storm-petrels—not to mention whales and dolphins. Guided by experts and weather-dependent, it’s one of the rare ways to see true offshore wildlife. Seas can be choppy, so bring motion sickness precautions and an adventurous spirit.

Where: Eureka, CA

Four days of vintage jazz, swing, blues, and soul fill the streets and venues of Old Town Eureka. National acts mix with local legends for concerts, partner dances, and jam sessions from morning until well after last call. It’s perfect for music lovers looking to tap their toes and soak in a lively, historic town vibe.

Where: Memorial Lighthouse Overlook, Trinidad

A solemn and beautiful local tradition where residents gather  to honor those lost at sea and wish safety for the current fleet for the season ahead.  A beautiful blessing and prayers is offered from local Yurok and Tsurai elders.  Bring something warm to sip, and join in this reflective, heartfelt start to the holiday season.

Where: Trinidad Head Trail,  Scenic Drive pullouts, Sue Meg State Park

Gray whales migrate along the coast and can be seen spouting from the shore. Bring binoculars and time your trip with a clear day for best views. Trinidad Head Trail offers the most rewarding views (and the best odds), but even a drive along Scenic Drive can deliver sightings if you’re lucky.
